Which Rules Control?
This Player Guide contains the event-specific rules for Ground Zero 2026. Standard pickleball rules apply to gameplay unless this guide or an official Ground Zero Event Bulletin states a specific modification.
| Priority | Controlling Source |
|---|---|
| 1 | Safety and emergency instructions issued by the venue, medic, Qourts, or Tournament Director. |
| 2 | The final Ground Zero 2026 Event Bulletin and official schedule published before competition. |
| 3 | This Official Player Guide. |
| 4 | The baseline pickleball ruleset identified in the Event Bulletin. |
Key Definitions
Official Call
A court, schedule, or readiness instruction issued by Qourts, the emcee acting for Qourts, or the assigned official.
Ready to Play
Both registered players are physically at the assigned court with legal equipment and are able to begin immediately.
Event Bulletin
The final pre-event notice containing check-in times, approved equipment standard, official ball, divisions, pools, and other tournament-specific details.
Judgment Call
An official's observation-based decision during live play. It is not appealable merely because a player disagrees.
Event-Day Essentials
Check-In and Player Readiness
Before You Can Play
Complete official check-in, confirm your name, category, approved skill division, team pairing, and waiver status. No completed waiver means no play.
When You Are Officially Present
A team is present only when both players are physically at the assigned court, properly equipped, and ready to begin.
- Listen for official announcements and monitor the schedule/standings channel designated by Qourts.
- Report before the official call time. A maximum five-minute grace period applies unless Qourts recognizes a documented emergency.
- Failure to hear a properly issued call does not automatically excuse late arrival.
Tournament Format
| Pool Structure | Teams Advancing | Semifinal Pairing |
|---|---|---|
| Single Pool / Single Bracket | Top four teams | Seed 1 vs Seed 4; Seed 2 vs Seed 3 |
| Two Pools / Two Brackets | Top two from each pool | Pool A #1 vs Pool B #2; Pool B #1 vs Pool A #2 |
ZZT and Qourts will confirm the final pool structure after registrations, approved divisions, and operational requirements are finalized.
Player Quick Guide
Do
- Arrive early and stay ready.
- Confirm the score before signing.
- Raise procedural concerns immediately and respectfully.
- Use only the official match ball.
- Follow umpire and Qourts instructions.
Do Not
- Delay play or leave without clearance.
- Alter score sheets or standings.
- Coach during live play.
- Use another person's registration.
- Harass players, officials, staff, or spectators.
Pool Play Match Rules
The first team to reach 11 points wins.
A score of 11β10 is a valid final score.
One timeout per team, maximum one minute, requested while the ball is dead and before the next serve.
Teams switch ends when either team first reaches 6.
Only on the assigned court immediately before play.
Only the validated Match Result Sheet controls.
Baseline Gameplay and Official Calls
- Serving, faults, non-volley-zone rules, line-call procedures, and rally administration follow the baseline pickleball ruleset named in the final Event Bulletin.
- The assigned umpire or referee has immediate authority over the court and keeps the official score.
- Players must stop only when the official calls a fault, stoppage, hindrance, or medical/safety interruption.
- A player may request the score or server confirmation before the serve. A request made after the rally begins does not automatically cancel the rally.
- Questions must be raised before the next serve whenever reasonably possible. Once the next serve occurs, the previous rally is normally closed except for a demonstrable score-recording error.
Bronze and Gold Medal Matches
| Match | Format | Side Switch | Officials |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Race to 11, win by 2 | At 6 points | 1st Referee and 2nd Referee; scoreboard required |
| Gold | Race to 15, win by 2 | At 8 points | 1st Referee and 2nd Referee; scoreboard required |
Pre-Match Procedure
- Both teams report to the assigned court.
- The umpire verifies the players and match assignment.
- Coin Toss determines the first choice.
- The winner chooses either first service or starting end; the opponent receives the remaining option.
- Teams receive up to two minutes of official warm-up/dinking on the assigned court.
- The umpire signals the first serve and records the official start time.
No dedicated warm-up courts are guaranteed. Unauthorized casual play or warm-up on active tournament courts may be stopped immediately.
Match Administration
Transition Window
Up to five minutes for result submission, court clearance, player entry, Coin Toss, and official warm-up.
Medical Timeout
One medical assessment period of up to five minutes for an injury or medical incident, unless emergency care requires longer.
Late Arrival and Forfeiture
A team is officially present only when both registered players are at the assigned court and ready to play.
- Qourts issues the official match call when the court is available.
- The five-minute grace period begins at that call.
- If the complete team is not ready when five minutes expires, Qourts records an 11β0 forfeit.
- A delay caused by Qourts, the venue, an ongoing official match, or a formally recognized emergency does not count against the team.
- Traffic, parking, meals, personal warm-up, failure to monitor announcements, and ordinary scheduling misunderstandings are not automatic exceptions.
Medical Timeout and Retirement
- Play stops upon the umpire's official injury call.
- The medical timeout begins at the official injury call and may last no more than five minutes.
- A medic may stop a player from continuing when safety is at risk.
- If the team cannot continue, the opponent receives 11 points and the retiring team retains its actual score at retirement.
- Attempted misuse of a medical timeout to delay play may be treated as unsportsmanlike conduct.
Equipment and Match Ball
- Only the tournament-issued official match ball may be used.
- Personal balls may not replace the official ball.
- Damaged balls may be replaced by the umpire.
- Paddles must satisfy the equipment standard announced in the Event Bulletin and may be inspected when reasonably requested.
- Refusal of a lawful equipment inspection may result in non-use of the equipment, match forfeit, or disciplinary action depending on the circumstances.
Paddle Modification and Permitted Accessories
Prohibited Modifications
Players shall use paddles that comply with the equipment standards announced in the Event Bulletin. Any modification intended to alter the paddle face, surface friction, spin potential, or other playing characteristics is strictly prohibited.
Prohibited modifications include, but are not limited to:
- Applying grit, abrasive material, friction-enhancing substances, textured coatings, sprays, adhesives, or any similar material to the paddle face;
- Sanding, resurfacing, scoring, etching, scraping, or otherwise changing the paddle face's original texture or roughness;
- Drilling, shaving, cutting, delaminating, or structurally altering the paddle beyond the manufacturer's original specifications; and
- Any alteration that creates an unfair competitive advantage or causes the paddle to fall outside the applicable equipment standard.
Permitted Accessories and Adjustments
The following are allowed, provided they do not alter the paddle's playing surface, conceal an unlawful modification, create a safety hazard, or otherwise violate the applicable equipment standard:
- Edge guards and edge-guard tape;
- Lead tape, tungsten tape, or comparable weight strips used for weight or balance adjustment;
- Replacement grips, overgrips, grip sleeves, and grip build-up materials applied to the handle; and
- Other protective, comfort, or balance accessories expressly approved by the Tournament Organizer.
Inspection and enforcement: Qourts or the Tournament Organizer may inspect any paddle before or during the tournament. A player must immediately stop using any paddle found, or reasonably believed, to violate this rule. Depending on the circumstances, refusal to cooperate or use of a prohibited paddle may result in paddle replacement, match forfeiture, disqualification, or other disciplinary action. The Tournament Organizer's decision is final and binding.
Team Timeout
Official Rule
- Each team is entitled to one (1) timeout per match.
- A timeout may only be requested by the serving team.
- The request must be made while the ball is dead and before the umpire authorizes the next serve.
- Each timeout shall not exceed one (1) minute.
- Once play resumes, the timeout is considered used.
- Unused timeouts do not carry over to another match.
Invalid Timeout Requests
A timeout request shall be denied when:
- The requesting team is not the serving team.
- The ball is in play.
- The team has already used its timeout.
- The request is made after the umpire has authorized the next serve.
Delay of Game
Players shall not intentionally delay play while waiting to regain the serve for the purpose of requesting a timeout. Repeated invalid timeout requests, stalling, or deliberate attempts to interrupt match flow may be penalized as Delay of Game.
Enforcement and Penalties
| Situation | Official Action |
|---|---|
| Unintentional first invalid request | Request denied; verbal reminder or warning at the umpireβs discretion. |
| Repeated invalid request | Official warning and possible Delay of Game violation. |
| Deliberate stalling or abuse | Technical penalty under the Sportsmanship and Discipline rules. |
| Severe or continued refusal to resume play | Match forfeit or tournament disqualification, depending on severity. |
Coaching
Coaching is Permitted only during an official timeout or between matches. Coaching during rallies or continuous live play is prohibited. Sideline conduct must not interfere with officials, delay play, or distract opponents.
Partner Substitutions and Withdrawals
| Situation | Official Rule |
|---|---|
| Player-requested partner swap | Not permitted after the official blind draw. Players may not privately exchange partners, transfer their tournament slot, or otherwise alter team composition, except as expressly permitted under the Withdrawal before Tournament Proper rule below. |
| Withdrawal before Tournament Proper | A registered player who becomes genuinely unable to participate before the official commencement of the tournament proper due to serious illness, injury, medical emergency, or another exceptional circumstance approved by the Tournament Organizer may withdraw from the event. The team may nominate an eligible replacement, or ZZT may appoint one from the official waitlist or another neutral player pool, whichever becomes available first. Any proposed replacement remains subject to ZZT's final approval after considering division eligibility, competitive balance, fairness, and compliance with the Tournament Rules. Supporting documentation may be required. No team or player acquires an automatic right to any particular replacement. |
| Partner substitution after Tournament Proper begins | Strictly prohibited. Once the tournament proper has officially commenced, no partner substitution shall be allowed, regardless of whether the team's first scheduled match has been played. If a player becomes injured, unavailable, or otherwise unable to continue after the tournament begins, the team must retire from or forfeit its remaining matches in accordance with these Tournament Rules. |
| Withdrawal before completing half of pool matches | All of that team's pool-match results shall be declared null and void and excluded from the official standings. |
| Withdrawal after completing at least half of pool matches | All completed match results shall remain official. Any remaining scheduled matches shall be recorded as 11β0 forfeits in favor of the opposing teams. |
Immediate notice required: Players must immediately notify Match Control or the Tournament Organizer if they become unable to participate or continue. Leaving the venue without notifying tournament officials shall not exempt the team from forfeiture, disciplinary action, or any other consequence under these Tournament Rules.
Apparel and Court Safety
- Wear appropriate athletic clothing and court shoes suitable for the Kingcourts indoor surface.
- Clothing, accessories, or equipment displaying hateful, discriminatory, obscene, or threatening content is prohibited.
- Loose jewelry, unsafe accessories, or damaged equipment may be removed from play when an official reasonably identifies a safety risk.
- Players remain responsible for securing personal belongings. ZZT, Qourts, and the venue are not custodians of unattended property.
Spectators and Personal Supporters
- Spectators may not enter active courts, stand behind baselines, interfere with calls, coach during live play, or otherwise distract participants or officials.
- Drums, horns, whistles, megaphones, air horns, sirens, loudspeakers, clappers, and any other similar noise-making device, instrument, or object that may distract, disrupt, or interfere with an ongoing match are strictly prohibited.
- Normal cheering, applause, and verbal encouragement are permitted, provided they remain respectful and do not occur during active rallies or otherwise interfere with play, officiating, announcements, or tournament operations.
- Players must reasonably assist officials in controlling their own coach, companion, or supporter.
- Qourts or the Tournament Organizer may require the immediate removal of any prohibited item and may relocate or remove any spectator or supporter whose conduct affects safety, fairness, concentration, or match flow.
- Spectator misconduct may result in a warning or disciplinary consequence to the associated player only when the player encourages, directs, participates in, or refuses a reasonable instruction to help stop the conduct.
Official Standings and Point System
Qourts maintains the only controlling standings. Player calculations, screenshots, verbal reports, and unofficial scoreboards do not override validated Qourts records.
| Standing Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MP | Matches played |
| W / L | Wins and losses |
| PE | Total official points earned |
| PC | Total official points conceded |
| Point Quotient | PE Γ· PC. A higher quotient ranks higher when this criterion applies. |
Tiebreaking Order
If two or more teams finish pool play with the same win-loss record, the following criteria are applied in order. A later criterion is used only when the teams remain tied after the preceding criterion.
- Win-loss percentage. Wins divided by matches played.
- Overall point quotient. Total official points scored divided by total official points conceded.
- Head-to-head result. Used only when exactly two teams remain tied and those teams played each other.
- Tied-team mini-table. When three or more teams remain tied, only matches played among those tied teams are considered. Teams are ranked first by mini-table win-loss percentage, then by mini-table point quotient.
- Restart rule. If one or more teams separate from a multi-team tie, the process restarts at Step 1 for the teams that remain tied.
View the full tiebreak explanation and examples
How the process works
The criteria are applied one step at a time. As soon as a criterion clearly separates a team from the others, that team takes the corresponding position. The remaining tied teams are then evaluated again under the restart rule.
1. Win-Loss Percentage
This is calculated as Wins Γ· Matches Played. The team with the higher percentage ranks higher.
2. Overall Point Quotient
This is calculated as Total Official Points Scored Γ· Total Official Points Conceded. The higher quotient ranks higher because it reflects stronger overall scoring performance relative to points allowed.
3. Head-to-Head Result
This criterion applies only when exactly two teams remain tied and they played each other. The winner of their direct match ranks higher. It is not used to resolve a tie involving three or more teams.
4. Tied-Team Mini-Table
When three or more teams remain tied, a separate ranking is created using only the matches played among those tied teams. Results against teams outside the tie are excluded. The tied teams are ranked first by mini-table win-loss percentage and then, if still tied, by mini-table point quotient.
5. Restart Rule
When a team separates from a multi-team tie, the remaining tied teams return to Step 1. This prevents a criterion designed for a larger group from being carried forward after the composition of the tie has changed.
Special Rule: Zero Points Conceded
A point quotient cannot be calculated when a team has conceded zero points because division by zero is undefined. Therefore:
- A tied team that conceded zero points ranks above a tied team that conceded one or more points.
- If multiple tied teams conceded zero points, the team with more total official points scored ranks higher.
- If they are still equal, the process continues to the next applicable criterion.
Score Confirmation and Corrections
- The umpire states the final score and both teams are given a reasonable opportunity to verify it.
- The winning representative signs the Match Result Sheet. A signature confirms the recorded score but does not prevent correction of a proven encoding error.
- Refusal to sign does not invalidate a result verified by the umpire and Qourts.
- A court-level score objection must be raised before leaving the court whenever possible.
- An encoding or standings error must be reported within ten minutes after the result or standings are publicly posted and before the affected playoff match begins, whichever occurs first.
- Identity fraud, falsified records, or deliberate tampering may be reviewed at any time during the event.
- Players may not alter, photograph for manipulation, carry away, or submit an official result sheet unless Qourts authorizes it.
Playoff Qualification and Seeding
Qourts validates all standings and announces playoff qualifiers and semifinal pairings only after the relevant pool results have been completed and encoded. Qualification is based on the published pool structure and ranking systemβnot popularity, registration order, or organizer preference.

Eligibility and Division Rules
| Requirement | Player-Facing Rule |
|---|---|
| Category limit | A player may enter a maximum of two categories. |
| Skill division | All entries must remain within one approved skill division. A player may not compete across multiple skill divisions. |
| Division review | ZZT may review playing history, known level, tournament experience, observed capability, and other reasonable evidence before final approval. |
| Identity | A player must compete under the registered identity. Impersonation or registration sharing is grounds for immediate disqualification. |
| Partner assignment | Blind-draw pairings become official after the public draw, subject only to documented operational substitutions or adjustments authorized by ZZT. |
| Final division approval | ZZT must communicate any reassignment before the blind draw. A player who declines the approved division may withdraw but may not compete in another division without formal approval. |
| Eligibility challenge | Must be submitted to Qourts with specific facts before the challenged team's first playoff match. Fraud or impersonation may be raised at any time. |
Player Conduct
Players must compete honestly, communicate respectfully, and follow lawful instructions from officials and Qourts. Full examples of prohibited conduct and the applicable penalty levels are provided in the dedicated Sportsmanship section.
Photography, Media, and Personal Information
- Event photography and video recording may occur in public competition and ceremony areas for tournament documentation and promotion.
- Players should notify registration before competition if they have a specific safety or privacy concern. ZZT will consider reasonable accommodations but cannot guarantee exclusion from incidental crowd or match footage.
- Registration and match data may be used only for tournament administration, standings, safety, communication, and legitimate event documentation, subject to the applicable privacy notice.
- Players and spectators may not use recordings to harass, misrepresent, or expose another person's private information.
Organizer and Qourts Powers
| Authority | Permitted Powers |
|---|---|
| Assigned Umpire / Referee | Immediate match control, score and timing administration, timeout and side-switch enforcement, conduct directions, medical stoppage, and first-level rulings. |
| Qourts β Official Match Control | Court flow, player calls, schedule movement, result validation, standings, tiebreak calculations, forfeiture administration, dispute intake, and operational review. |
| ZZT Tournament Director | Final authority over unresolved governance, eligibility, safety, scheduling, disciplinary, and operational matters, subject to the published rules and applicable law. |
Qourts may move matches to another court, adjust operational start times, preserve match sequence, and issue readiness calls when reasonably necessary to maintain safety, fairness, and event flow.
Organizer and Match Control Limitations
- They may not secretly change a completed result merely to produce a preferred qualifier.
- They may not apply different rules to similarly situated players without a documented, legitimate reason.
- They may not disregard the published tiebreaking order for convenience.
- They may not override a valid umpire judgment call merely because a player or spectator disagrees.
- They must avoid conflicts of interest and, where practicable, assign a neutral decision-maker to review a protest involving a directly interested official.
- Material exceptions should be documented and communicated to affected players.
- Safety and emergency powers must be used for legitimate protectionβnot competitive favoritism.
- No player may be penalized merely for making a respectful, good-faith protest.
- An official with a direct personal interest in a dispute should not make the final review decision when a neutral reviewer is reasonably available.
Protests, Disputes, and Appeals
| Issue | Reviewable? |
|---|---|
| Umpire judgment call on a live play | Generally no. Judgment calls stand unless there is a clear procedural or score-recording error. |
| Incorrect score entered on the result sheet | Yes, when raised promptly with credible supporting information. |
| Player eligibility or identity | Yes. Qourts may refer the matter to ZZT for final eligibility determination. |
| Standings calculation or tiebreak application | Yes. Qourts reviews the official records and calculation method. |
| Published schedule preference | No automatic right to a preferred time or court. Review is limited to genuine conflict, safety, or procedural error. |
Delays, Interruptions, and Force Majeure
- Official match clocks pause during a declared suspension.
- A suspended match normally resumes from its last confirmed score and match status.
- Qourts manages revised timing and court movement.
- ZZT may shorten, postpone, relocate, suspend, or cancel part of the event when required by safety, venue conditions, emergency, power interruption, government order, or other force majeure.
- Refunds or credits, if applicable, follow the separately published registration and cancellation policy.
Emergency and Safety Reporting
- Report injuries, unsafe court conditions, missing persons, threats, or emergencies immediately to the nearest official, Qourts desk, venue staff, or medic.
- Emergency instructions override the normal schedule and match sequence.
- Do not move a seriously injured person unless directed by qualified personnel or necessary to avoid immediate danger.
- The final Event Bulletin must identify the medic station and emergency communication point.

Assigned Umpire or Referee
May issue immediate reminders, warnings, and in-match sanctions within the scope of match administration.
Qourts β Official Match Control
May review incidents, confirm or escalate sanctions, administer forfeitures, document misconduct, and refer serious matters to the Tournament Director.
ZZT Tournament Director
May impose or confirm disqualification, venue removal, or other final event-level sanctions for severe or unresolved misconduct.
Appeal Scope
Factual or procedural errors may be reviewed. Ordinary judgment regarding the seriousness of observed conduct generally stands unless clearly unreasonable or inconsistent with the published rules.
Disciplinary Process
- The official should identify the conduct and penalty level to the player when circumstances allow.
- Qourts records Level 2 through Level 5 sanctions and the factual basis for the decision.
- A player may request review for mistaken identity, factual error, procedural error, or a penalty outside the published range.
- Immediate safety removal may occur before a full explanation. Review follows once the situation is controlled.
- Sanctions apply only to the responsible player or team unless another person independently participated in the misconduct.

Storehouse.phA Message of Gratitude to Our Sponsors and Partners
As we prepare for Ground Zero 2026, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to every sponsor, partner, and community supporter who chose to be part of this journey.
Your trust and generosity mean more than simply supporting a tournament. You are helping create an event where players can compete with passion, families and friends can come together, and new connections can be built through a shared love for pickleball. Your partnership is helping lay the foundation for an experience that celebrates sportsmanship, camaraderie, and the continued growth of our local pickleball community.
Every contributionβwhether as a Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze Sponsor, or Community Supporterβplays an important role in bringing Ground Zero 2026 to life. Together, you are helping provide a well-organized, enjoyable, and memorable tournament experience for every participant, volunteer, official, and guest.
We are honored that you have placed your confidence in our vision. Your support inspires us to deliver an event that reflects the professionalism, integrity, and community spirit that all of us share.
As the tournament approaches, we look forward to celebrating not only great competition, but also the partnerships that make gatherings like this possible. We hope Ground Zero 2026 becomes the beginning of many more opportunities for our community to grow together, both on and off the court.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in our vision and for standing with us as we bring Ground Zero 2026 to life.
